The Meaning, Myths and Spiritual Power of a Blue Moon
So what’s all the fuss about? Why do so many romantic myths and legends revolve around the “blue moon”?
What Does “Once in a Blue Moon” Mean?
First things first — it’s not usually about colour (although dust, smoke, or volcanic particles can tint the moon bluish).
A blue moon is defined in two ways:
The second full moon in the same calendar month
The third full moon in a season that has four
No matter how you define it, it’s always rare — hence that famous phrase, “once in a blue moon.”
The History of the Blue Moon
According to some scholars, the term may have started as belewe moon, meaning “betrayer moon.” Why? Because it sometimes threw the old church calendar into chaos, forcing an extra month of fasting during Lent.
The Oxford English Dictionary even traces it back to 1528, with this proverb:
“If they say the moon is blue, / We must believe that it is true.”
The Spiritual Meaning of a Blue Moon
Within pagan and Wiccan traditions, the blue moon is considered incredibly powerful. It’s seen as a time when the veil between our world and the Divine feels thinner — offering heightened communication with spirit.
Blue Moon Energy and Rituals
Many believe this is the perfect time for:
Love or healing ceremonies
Attracting new opportunities or partners
Enhanced dreams and prophecy
Rituals connecting with the Crone Goddess or Divine feminine
Think of it as cosmic high-speed Wi-Fi for your intuition.
A Modern Twist
While researching, I stumbled on a thought by one white witch:
“On those occasions when one waxes nostalgic, even after never-experienced events, perhaps one should partake of a Blue Moon Martini — Bombay Sapphire Blue Gin and Blue Curacao.”
Now that’s my kind of lunar philosophy!
Final Thoughts
So whether you’re setting intentions, stirring a ritual, or simply gazing at the sky with a cocktail in hand — may your “once in a blue moon” moments bring a little extra magic into your life.
